Portable Putting Greens
Naturally the biggest advantage of having your own portable putting green is the flexibility in where you can put it and the ease with which you can move it. You can play at home in the morning and depending on your work situation you can putt a few balls on your lunch break, before bringing your portable putting green home again in the evening to sink a few more putts on your practice green.
Portable putting greens are most suitable for golf lovers whose garden may not be large enough to have an outdoor putting green nor their homes conducive to having an indoor putting green installed. They also suit people whose job has them traveling frequently, what better way to spend those endless hours in faceless hotel rooms than by mastering your putting skills? These portable greens are compact and easy to transport as most of them you simply roll up and put back in their case and bring them with you.
Whether it is to play in the evening once the kids have gone to bed, or to unwind in the office after a tough day, portable putting greens provide the opportunity to relax, unwind and practice your golf at the same time.
Portable golf greens vary from cheap greens with a very unnatural surface (not recommended) to more modern models, that might be a little bit more expensive but will be of far greater benefit to your game, if you are a serious player.
Portable putting greens not only help you keep your handicap down, they’re also healthy for your bank balance. No more pricey training sessions with a professional golfer, nor costly prices as you practice your putting on expensive greens, your own portable practice green ensures that your putting is not the only thing that you are cutting back on.
What to look for in Indoor Putting Greens
Indoor putting greens may mean you get less sun but they also mean you get less rain and that can only be good news from a golfer’s perspective.
Indoor golf putting greens are no longer reserved solely for the homes of golf enthusiasts. They are now commonplace at corporate events such as conventions and also adorn the reception areas of large businesses. Their growing popularity can be attributed to a few factors amongst them competitive prices, practicality and a wide choice of putting green to suit any occasion.
Whether you are having an open putting tournament with colleagues or friends, or if you are concentrating on refining your putting skills there are other practice putting green features to look out for when considering which indoor putting green to purchase. (You may be able to get these items separately to your green).
- A step on either side to facilitate both left and right-handed golfers
- Putt reducer to make your target that little bit more difficult to reach thus enhancing your putting ability
- Putter-rack to rest your putters against
Depending on the type of green that you wish to buy you will need to consider some installation issues, though most are very easy to install and will pose no maintenance difficulties.
Once you have identified the room in your home or office, that you intend putting your practice green, then you need to measure the dimensions in that room in order to find a green that will be a suitable match for that room. You should bear in mind that you may find yourself becoming more popular with friends and family once you buy an indoor putting green so, if possible, try to put the green in a roomy area in your house / office allowing for visitors and suitable for a party or tournament.
Should you intend to buy an indoor putting green purely for practice then you will only require a smaller area as you will not expect to have fellow-players or guests lounging around.
Practice Putting Green featured on the TV show Psych
We are big fans of the offbeat psychic detective show, Psych, on the USA Network. So we were doubly thrilled when, early in Friday’s episode, Sean attempted a straightforward, albeit long, putt down the corridor of the Police precinct towards a practice putting green not unlike the Caddie Mat Automatic Return Putting Green.
Needless to say, in true Psych fashion, the golf ball took an incredibly circuitous route towards the pin on the practice putting green. Just as it looked like Sean had pulled off the greatest putt in golf putting practice history. The ball was kicked off target, just inches from the hole.
Oh well. That’s Psych!
If you want to try to emulate Sean & Gus’ golf escapades, why not get your own
Caddie Mat Automatic Return Putting Green.
Expand-A-Green Modular Putting Green Review
As it’s name suggests, the Expand-A-Green practice green is one of the most expandable and easily portable modular putting greens on the market.
Each Expand-A-Green kit contains ten modular interlocking panels, two regulation size cups and two flag sticks. Pins can be placed at multiple locations. The playing surface is around half an inch thick, so the cups are not fully sunk though they are recessed.
Expand-A-Green is weather resistant and as such is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. It measures 24 square feet in area. The ball travels at country club speed.
A six piece expansion kit is available, allowing for a large number of putting green configurations.
Care must be taken when attaching modules to each other to ensure there is no lip or seam between modules. This is to be expected with this type of modular putting green that does not use an overlay.
If you’re looking for a fun, portable and changeable practice putting green that plays at a great speed, all at a reasonable price, it’s hard to beat Expand-A-Green.

Advantages of Synthetic Putting Greens
While most of us would love to own our own golf course this is unlikely unless we win the lottery. However, owning your own practice putting green is another thing and certainly not reliant on the proceeds of a lottery win. This article examines putting greens, specifically synthetic putting greens.
Synthetic putting greens are a close substitute for the real thing but are in need of a lot less maintenance than ‘real’ grass putting greens. The greens in levels vary between those with some elevation, to the popular straight put style and even downhill slopes. They are built to withstand the harshest of weather climates and usually have long-term guarantees which hopefully you will never need.
With synthetic greens rather than true grass you can also avoid the hardship of watering, weeding, fertilizing, mowing and paying for the upkeep of your green. The biggest advantage to owing a synthetic putting green is that your putting is never rained off. The bane in the lives of all golfers be them recreational or pro is the dreaded downpour that puts an immediate end to an enjoyable putting session. This is a worry that owners of synthetic greens don’t have, as most can be played on year-round, irrespective of conditions.
If you are considering having a golf green installed at home, that would probably mean you are a pretty keen golfer and will be using it on a daily basis, not to mention the fact that your friends and family will probably be using it too. This constant use could create wear and tear on a green made of real grass, again this is a pain you can avoid with a synthetic green as they are built to withstand the pressure of prolonged use.
Synthetic greens are as close to putting perfection as there can be. They make the sensible choice for a home golf practice green and are growing in popularity, it’s not difficult to see why.
Choosing A Putting Green
Like most things nowadays putting greens come in all shapes and sizes and throw up a myriad of questions that potential buyers must wade through before choosing their ideal putting green.
Indoor or Outdoor
This is an easy enough question to answer as it will boil down to a space issue. If your garden is cramped or if you have no garden at all then you can readily decide on the indoor putting green. Similarly if your house is not conducive for the space of a putting green then you too have an easy decision, you must settle on the outdoor practice green. The real question is for those of you who have space in both your garden and your house.
Obviously, if you want a real grass putting green then it must be outside.
If you want an indoor putting green make sure you allow for the space that your swing will take up when deciding what room to put it in. Outdoor greens do tend to need some maintenance due to weather, so bear that in mind in your decision-making process. At the same time, they often allow more space
Real or Synthetic
As mentioned above if you want real grass you will require an outdoor green whereas a synthetic green can be used both inside and out. Synthetic greens require far less maintenance though some will argue as they are synthetic they do not offer the same practice quality that grass greens offer.
I would disagree with this as the quality of synthetic greens has improved vastly in recent years and they are as close to the real thing as possible.
Another consideration is that many synthetic putting greens are portable and thus can move location to another part of your garden, to a neighbor’s garden, or even to a tailgate party!
Portable or Permanent
If you are someone who travels frequently and wishes to practice your putting in the office or in your hotel then a portable putting green is perfect for you. This often restricts the size of the portable putting green, though the final decision is yours, depending on how easy you will find it to move.
On the other hand if you plan on practicing exclusively at home then you should consider a permanent putting green.
Backyard or Front Garden
Another simple solution to this choice, simply size and space will dictate where your home putting green will go. Security should be another consideration. Unsecured portable putting greens should not be left within sight of the street when you are not attending it.
Self-installation or Professional-installation
Most greens are quite simple to install, in fact they need little or no installation but depending on the complexity of your green you may need professional installation experts to do the work for you. Most companies who sell putting greens suggest and indeed offer this service themselves.
Once you have a decision for each of these five queries then you will be able to refine your search for the putting green that is ideal for you.
